ABSTRACT

Collage gives children a wonderful opportunity to explore a wide range of materials and create interesting and varied pieces of art by choosing, placing and arranging. This can be particularly engaging for children who are critical of their drawing skills and lack confidence in art as a result. Planning learning experiences based around collage can focus on the use of collected and recycled materials, making projects and units of work economical and responsive to the resources available locally. In this chapter the following areas will be considered:

● Subject knowledge that underlies teaching

● Teaching children to use collage techniques

Collage often provides the opportunity for combining a range of materials and techniques in a mixed media approach. Collage techniques can be used as a way of creating decorated surface on which to paint, draw or print; it can be used to add detail and texture to a painting or print; or it can be a way of creating interesting papers to use in sculpture. In addition there is great potential for using ICT as part of a unit of work involving collage or as the main outcome.
