ABSTRACT

Some young people were not satisfied with official culture. They continued the Russian tradition of self-education and developed their own private culture which they referred to as a ‘catacomb’ culture. Ernst Neizvestny, who became a famous sculptor and had a furious row with Khrushchev over art, describes his experience. Khrushchev’s son commissioned Neizvestny to do a headstone which would serve as a memorial to this father. It can now be seen in Novodevichy cemetery, Moscow.
