ABSTRACT

We had repeatedly, and even yesterday, stated the Minister, turned to him with the request that he make a plea for moderation at Petersburg. He had always gladly complied with this request and during the last crisis had subjected himself to reproaches from Russia to the effect that he was placing himself too much on our side and too little on theirs. Now he was turning to us with the request that we should make use of our influence at Vienna either to get them to accept the reply from Belgrade as satisfactory or as the basis for conferences. He was convinced that it lay in our hands to bring the matter to a settlement by means of the proper representations, and he would regard it as a good augury for the future if we two should once again succeed in assuring the peace of Europe by means of our mutual influence on our allies.
