ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 presented an introduction to the ideas of

culture and structure. Here in Chapter 2, we develop

these discussions in relation to key debates and theories

on communication and representation.

Communication is the process of making meaning.

It is how one individual (or a word, object, sign, gesture

or similar) conveys meaning to another individual – be

that meaning intentional or not. Significantly, this

process of communication also involves representation (p. 43), in that meaning is represented through objects
