ABSTRACT

By the late fifteenth century, Catholic Christianity had been thereligion of western Europe since time out of mind; and it was time, tradition and continuity which gave late medieval Christianity much of its power. The Church was the preserver and the interpreter of the past, and the past weighed heavily on the medieval mind.
