ABSTRACT
The Palace of Westminster, that magnificent range of Gothic buildings along the banks of the Thames, is probably the United Kingdom’s most famous landmark. The Clock Tower at the north end of the palace and the striking of Big Ben, the hour bell of the Great Clock, are known throughout the world. The palace is one of the greatest achievements of nineteenth-century architecture and art, and even those who work there every day remain awed by its power and confidence.
