Theory and practice: secure knowledge and understanding of what it means to teach
This chapter explores some of the many accepted and respected theories that set out to explain how, when and in what conditions learning takes place. The common beliefs and traditions of those working in further education, adult education and work-based learning environments regarding the nature of education are explored. A number of respected theories of learning are presented and evaluated. You are advised to use this evaluation to inform your practice. The use of tools to assess student learning styles is reviewed in the light of research by Coffield et al. (2004).
