ABSTRACT

After studying this chapter the student should be able to:

List the functions of a woodworking machine.

List the common sense behavioural requirements of persons using woodworking machines.

Explain the "general" requirements (all machines) which are mandatory under the Woodworking Machines Regulations 1974.

Identify and state the specific functions of the following machines;

hand fed circular saw;

dimension saw;

surface planer;

thicknesser;

chain and/or hollow square chisel morticer.

Sketch and name the guards and safety devices associated with the use of the overhand planer, indicating all critical dimensions.

Sketch details and describe the function of the various types of circular saw blade and teeth.

Explain with sketches the cutting action of the chain and hollow square chisel morticing machines.

Calculate from given data:

the pitch of cutter marks on machine planed timber;

the peripheral speed of a circular saw blade;

the pitch of circular saw teeth.
