ABSTRACT
Class as an organising principle of British society seemed to reach its peak after the Second World War. Manual workers still comprised around 70 per cent of the male workforce, and 50 per cent of the electorate voted for Labour in 1945. This has often been seen as the culmination of a process in which the working class finally saw themselves as an entity with common interests.
