ABSTRACT
The locations of defensive works in England are based on information in
various books listed below, but also and principally on the Defence of
Britain database, the result of several years of research by volunteers and of
cataloguing and data entry by workers based at the Imperial War Museum,
Duxford. The site is at https://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/specColl/dob. The
works are classified by type of structure which did not suit my needs in con-
structing possible events in specific locations and I was guided to the
appropriate methodology by Dr William Kilbride, User Services Manager,
Archaeology Data Service. As he pointed out, the method described throws
up all sites of any age in a given area and it is necessary to weed out those
not wanted, but I found it very much the best approach and also came upon
things irrelevant to my task but fascinating in their own right, which was
fun.
