ABSTRACT

Anumber of high-born supporters were open or closet Jacobites inEngland and in exile. There were two types of exiles. The first group left England with James II, because of their principles and their religion;

they were generally staunch Catholics and had been members of James’s

government. The second group were mostly discontented Protestant

Tories, who went into exile when their activities meant they were likely

to be impeached for high treason.
