Writing in response to literature
I want to propose a major review of current practice, and of the theoretical assumptions that underly much writing based on response to literature. Necessarily I am going to be schematic. There is limited scope to invite you to look closely with me at the evidence to support such a proposal. Indeed, as you will be aware, if I am to bring out the main points in a short space there will inevitably have to be some polarization in the evidence selected. So let us begin by warning ourselves about these things, and take advantage of the discussion both to challenge and to build out from the introductory framework I shall offer.
