THE ECONOMY: BIG BUCKS AND WHO GETS THEM?

The population of Afghanistan, in 2000, was 25.8 million. About 1.3 million were killed during the war against the Soviet Union and as many again maimed. About 6 million fled to Pakistan and Iran with many returning. In November 2001, the UN estimated that there were 2 million refugees in Pakistan, 1.5 million in Iran, 1,500 in Turkmenistan, 8,800 in Uzbekistan and 15,400 in Tajikistan. It can be assumed that the refugees in the Central Asian states are ethnically the same as the host republic. Life expectancy for males is 47 years and for women 45 years.
