I have already suggested to local historians that they need not always try to write a complete history of their chosen place from beginning to end. You might well decide to devote yourself to a close study of a limited period, especially perhaps the nineteenth century and early twentieth. The sources are abundant and they require no knowledge of Latin or of old handwriting. Moreover, the recent past contains so much that is preserved only in people’s memories. It is in great danger of being completely forgotten unless some good local historian takes the trouble to record it.
