Introduction

The Caribbean is a region in which the aboriginal communities were virtu­ ally exterminated, and replaced by peoples from Africa, Asia and Europe. Yet it has established a distinctive identity that in turn has contributed to global cultures, including those of the countries from which its peoples originally came. This introduction examines the problems of defining the ‘Caribbean’ and its literatures.
