ABSTRACT
This has been the effect of wider shifts affecting all sections of Carib bean society. In the black communities, the legacy of slavery had created a pattern of absent fathers in which the mother or grandmother was the sole parent and provider. Yet, as Olive Senior has written, the ‘myth’ of the strong black matriarch ‘disguises the fact of her powerlessness in the wider society’.
