ABSTRACT

The collapse o f the Ilkhanate after the death o f Abu Sa'id in 736/1335 resulted in a series o f factional struggles for control o f the central government o f Persia, struggles which had no decisive victor. Con cepts o f political legitimacy tended to require that the throne should remain the perquisite o f the house o f Chingiz Khan, if not o f the Huleguid branch of it, and a series o f Chingizids were briefly elevated in various parts o f the land, most o f them - with the exception o f Togha Temur, who ruled in western Khurasan until 754/1353 - as puppets or semi-puppets o f the contending factions.
