ABSTRACT
While no one would wish to belittle those changes occurring before 1837, there are few who could deny the enormous social, economic and regional impact of the Victorian, Edwardian and latter Georgian periods of our history. Here the south-eastern changes will be recounted in terms of population, rural, urban and industrial development. And once again we must acknowledge the forceful and continuing influence of London on the lives of south-eastern people.
