ABSTRACT

John Sheffield, Earl of Mulgrave wrote Art Essay upon Satire which circulated in MS in 1679, and was attributed by some to D.; this probably occasioned the Rose Alley attack on D. on 18 December 1679. Mulgrave also wrote An Essay upon Poetry. D. dedicated Aureng-Zebe to him in 1676. Helen, having received the foregoing epistle from Paris, returns the following answer: wherein she seems at first to chide him for his presumption in writing as he had done, which could only proceed from his low opinion of her virtue; then owns herself to be sensible of the passion which he had expressed for her. This epistle is preceded in Ovid by one to Helen from Paris, son of Priam the King of Troy, written while he is her guest, and her husband Menelaus is away. Helen's mother, Leda, was possessed by Jupiter in the shape of a swan.
