Composed c. April 1810. The lines were included in a conspiratorial letter to Edward Fergus Graham dated 23 April in L i 9, and were prefixed to ch. ix of St Irvyne, that in which the innocent Eloisa is seduced, by the satanic Nempere. Nothing is known of ‘The Revenge’, perhaps a title arbitrarily attached to a casual epigram.
