ABSTRACT

In the general discussion of significance testing at the beginning of Chapter 8, it was indicated that a group of tests termed ‘parametric’ existed that could be used in relation to sample data recorded in interval or ratio units. A number of underlying assumptions were also stressed, these assumptions essentially applying to various charcteristics of the population from which the sample had been selected. Having considered in the previous chapter some of the simpler and less-demanding non-parametric tests for which most of these assumptions were not relevant, it is now necessary to review the basic parametric tests which, when they are applicable, provide more stringent assessments of statistical significance.
