ABSTRACT
Despite the remarkable growth of royal authority the king was still far from being absolute. The developing uniformity of governmental institutions and of the hierarchy of officials which supervised their operation never ensured automatic and immediate obedience to the king’s will throughout the country; and beneath the apparent tranquillity at the centre fragments of evidence hint that the court could be the scene of intrigue between magnates attempting to secure influence over the king.
