ABSTRACT
The story of slavery in the Americas effectively begins and ends in Brazil even though slaves were introduced to Hispaniola and Cuba earlier. Slavery first took root in Brazil in the late sixteenth century, and Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery – in 1888. In the intervening period, more than four million Africans arrived in the slave ships.
