ABSTRACT

The history of slavery is the history of slave resistance. Indeed, we know a great deal about slavery from the attempts by slave holders to keep slaves in their place: laws to regulate slaves, to punish the recalcitrant and innumerable examples of punishments meted out to resistant slaves. In recent years, however, historians have begun to discuss slave resistance more subtly and to argue that resistance involved much more than revolt or rebellion. It has also become clear that a great deal of slave resistance derived directly from the slaves’ African past.
