ABSTRACT
Citizenship bestows upon the individual legitimate membership of a political community. In the modem world, this normally means membership of a nation state, although in recent times international organisations such as the European Union (EU) have employed the language of citizenship when seeking to legitimise systems of governance that reach beyond individual states.
