Jawaharlal Nehru’s Speech at Independence

Just before midnight on August 14/15 1947 Jawaharlal Nehru, the recognized leader of India’s nationalist movement, stood before India’s Constituent Assembly and called upon his fellow members to take a pledge to the service of the new nation. This speech outlined both the celebratory and solemn nature of the occasion and addressed Nehru’s aspirations for the new nation. With this pledge, the Constituent Assembly became India’s Provisional Parliament, until elections could be held.
