ABSTRACT

The vezir Muhadhdhab al-Din, who was in the vicinity of Amasya, went on his own responsibility with the city qadi to find Baiju. At the time of Kosedag the Armenians had captured some fugitives and, still worse, had handed over to the Mongols Kay Khusraw's mother, who had taken refuge with them. Karatay was a freedman of Greek Christian origin, perhaps attached to Kay Kawus I, and in any case in the sultan's personal service from the start of Kay Qubadh I's reign. 'Izz al-Din and Yutas were suddenly made aware then that Baiju at the head of all his troops was invading Asia Minor. Baiju was advancing rapidly, and all the great cities opened their gates as the plundering began. To the south of Aksaray, Yutas and Arslan Dogmus offered battle at the caravanserai of 'Ala' al-Din. The situation of the two Seljukid territories in regard to the Mongols was not identical.
