Human aspects

A successful health and safety management approach will recognize and value

the important and fundamental contribution that individuals make in support

of a safe working environment. Effective health-and safety policies seek not

only to combat the possibility of accident and hazardous incidents, but also to

generate a wider culture of welfare, health and safety throughout the organ-

ization. To achieve this the organization must seek to understand the key

influences upon the behavioural characteristics of employees and manage-

ment. The development of behaviour safety management approaches has been

the subject of study in recent years leading to goal setting practices and the

piloting of behavioural safety auditing. This chapter discusses the importance

of people to an organization developing a health and safety management

subsystem.
