ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the key factors to consider in developing an effective
health and safety policy. Construction organizations which successfully achieve
a high standard of health and safety practice invariably have in place clear
and accepted health and safety policies. Moreover, these policies embrace the
organization's social and corporate responsibilities for health and safety and
develop a holistic and supportive culture in which good practice becomes the
norm rather than the exception. Clear health and safety policies provide for
the systematic and cost-effective identification, monitoring and control of health
and safety risk and are prerequisite to the planning and organization of an
effective health and safety management system.
