ABSTRACT

Most buildings constructed in modern times using techniques which have been evolved during the past thousand years are referred to as traditional buildings. The methods of construction found by 'trial and error' over the years have proved successful, having been tried and approved by both builders and occupants alike. Components and structural elements adopted today are the results of well-tried techniques used in different areas of the country, and due to better communications systems being introduced a gradual standardisation of construction was developed; this however was still a very slow process in the United Kingdom.
