ABSTRACT

Anne Jem im a Clough, born in 1820, was the first Principal of Newnham College, Cambridge, one of the first two colleges for women in the University of Cambridge, serving from 1871 until her death in 1892. Blanche Athena Clough, born in 1861, was the fourth Principal, serving only from 1920 to 1923 but a power in the college long before that. They were aunt and niece. Anne Jem im a’s brother, Blanche A thena’s father, was Arthur Hugh Clough, favourite pupil of Dr Arnold of Rugby, poet, whose loss of faith attracted m uch attention, yet another of those worn out in the service of Florence Nightingale, and who died aged 42, three m onths after Blanche A thena was born. Both Anne Jem im a and Blanche Athena had to learn to live with an icon.
