ABSTRACT
Most of the surviving narrative accounts of Louis IX written by near-contemporaries portray hirn as a one-dimensional figure, a saint in a stained glass window. This image has proved so compelling that until recent years' almost all modern assessments of the king have been coloured by it, and cloak Louis with a solemn and reverend aura .
