ABSTRACT

The politicisation of difference takes place in a variety of ways, and not all groups have the same level of development. The development of a counter-culture represents the first step towards politicisation. Large minorities which have visions of becoming nation states create their own history, pointing to the difference in origin between themselves and the people who rule them. Culture is a product of modernity, building upon appearance, language and religion. Polish immigrants in Britain developed a wide range of organisations almost immediately after their entry into the country. The existence of a minority culture often represents the first step towards the growth of some form of political activism, which in the case of post-War Europe has taken a variety of forms. Political consciousness amongst Blacks and Asians in Britain has had a series of aspects since the Second World War.
