ABSTRACT
Since the mid-1980s an increasing desire by atmospheric scientists to under stand and model atmospheric processes has led to a greater interest in how the land surface affects the atmosphere. A series of meso-scale and continentalscale experiments has therefore been established, in which hydrologists are play ing an increasing role. These experiments, which are different in scope and concept from conventional hydrological catchment experiments (Chapter 6), are described in Boxes 8.1 and 8.2 .
