Lexicography as theory

Dictionary compilers do not normally communicate directly with their target usership, but via the product of their work, the dictionary text, and feedback from the user to the dictionary maker is also, if it happens at all, based on indirect observations reported by teachers, reviewers, librarians or booksellers. Figure 3.1 (based on the DoL, 1998: 2 5) illustrates the multi-stage relationships between the compiler, the dictionary text and the user (allowing also for the possible mediation of teachers and other experts, such as dictionary researchers).
