ABSTRACT

Changes in construction technology continue to take place due to research, innovation and developments from practitioners. During the post-war period of reconstruction, architects and engineers strove to harness the industrial production techniques developed during the war for civil construction programmes. The increased standardisation of some building components have allowed them to be delivered directly to the construction site for immediate installation. The design of buildings is influenced by a combination of different factors such as: the physical characteristics of the site, the culture prevailing at the time and the material resources available. Changes in the evolution of building design and technology can perhaps be best illustrated by comparing two domestic buildings, one designed at the turn of the twentieth century and the other at the turn of the twenty-first century. The thrust of changes to design and construction, and the utilisation of new technology, have been aimed at adding value to a client's project.
