ABSTRACT

The Book of Margery Kempe provides important evidence about international pilgrimage in the early fifteenth century - the motivations behind it, its mechanics, and the hazards and problems which pilgrims faced. It also casts light on the behaviour of the English abroad, the ways in which they interacted with foreigners, and the question of how far the development of a sense of nationality in England was coming to over shadow affective adherence to the concept of Christendom.
