There are few people who do not appreciate a well-lit street, be they motorist, passenger, cyclist or pedestrian. They may not like it aesthetically, but that is another story. What do they appreciate? • The degree of safety in an otherwise extremely hazardous situation. • The ability to see the outdoor scene in total, not as a restricted view in the beam
How is this achieved? Not in the same way as a well-lit interior. There is no convenient 'ceiling' to fit the lighting to, no walls to reflect light and it would be impractical to maintain even illumination along the roadway. The design techniques developed for interior lighting are of little use in this situation.
