ABSTRACT

For the interest groups that were pursuing aspects of the progressive agenda these years saw significant gains. The woman suffrage movement gathered momentum with new, more militant approaches and the success of statewide organizing campaigns. In similar fashion, the Anti-Saloon League saw marked acceleration in the number of states and localities banning the sale of alcohol. Restriction of immigration, the outlawing of child labor, the drives for an income tax and the direct election of senators all drew nearer to victory during these tumultuous years.
