ABSTRACT

There has been a steady growth in the academic study of linkages between farming and environmental issues, especially with a focus upon resource management problems and notions of sustainable development (e.g. Buttel, 1992; Cocklin, 1995; Drummond and Marsden, 1999; Hassenein and Kloppenburg, 1995; Liepins, 1995; McHenry, 1996). In part this growth reflects awareness, evolving over several decades, of environmental impacts arising from productivist agricultural policies (Table 10.1).
