ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses linguistic micro-analysis with an analysis of discursive practices of a scientific community and end up describing linguistic phenomena in relation to the social practices of that community. The chapter focuses on the interactional and social aspect of the scientific community, and, therefore, in analysing texts, it concentrates on interpersonal characteristics in scientific texts. Communication is crucial to the work of the scientific community, both from the point of view of scientific development and an individual scientist. In fact, scientific discourse is a prerequisite of all scientific activity. In scientific communicative situations, the saving of a writer's or a speaker's own face is associated with satisfying the criteria of science. Person's reading conference papers or writing articles must show consideration for the face of their audience by making positive references to their colleagues' research, by developing their ideas further and by emphasising the importance of a discipline or a school.
