ABSTRACT
In this brief post-script to the volume, I want to raise some issues which a number of contributors have raised for me as a sociolinguist primarily concerned with real-world problems in institutional settings. So I shall discuss only a few of the chapters which seem to me particularly relevant to my concerns, and leave to John Wilson the much more daunting task of commenting on virtually all of them.
