ABSTRACT

Cities are fast becoming the principal human habitat. Eighty per cent of the population of high-income countries live in cities, and at the turn of the millenium around half the world’s people were urbanized. Two-thirds of the world’s economic production and consumption takes place in the cities of the rich world, and 12 per cent in those of the developing world. If societies around the world are to make the transition to more sustainable forms of development, then sustainable cities are a key priority.
