ABSTRACT

A good place to start is the three volumes of the Longrnan HistOly ofRussia: Paul Dukes, The Making of Russian Absolutism, 1613-1801 (2nd edn, London, 1990), David Saunders, Russia in the Age of Reaction and Reforln, 1801-1881 (London, 1992), Hans Rogger, Russia in the Age of Modernisation and Revolution, 1881-1917 (London, 1983). Dietrich Geyer, Russian Imperialism: The Interaction ofDomestic and Foreign Policy, 1814-1914 (Leamington Spa, 1987) is valuable for the later period, as is Marc Raeff, Imperial Russia, 1682-1825: The Coming of Age of Modern Russia (New York, 1971) for the early period. Old, but very readable and meticulous in its scholarship is Michael Florinsky, Russia: A History and an Interpretation, 2 vols (London, 1953).
