ABSTRACT

The following concepts 'life-world', 'experiential learning', 'teaching', 'knowledge' and 'autobiographical knowledge' form the core conceptual framework for discussing experiential, autobiographical, knowledge-based foreign language education. Autobiographical knowledge: Autobiography may be described as a life-story of just one individual who is the central character of the life drama which unfolds. Autobiographical knowledge is experiential and subjective knowledge of ourselves. The research literature concerning the use of experiential autobiographical knowledge emphasises the fact that we have to be aware of the mechanism through which our memory is constructed, because that knowledge helps us to consider the experiential material critically. The introduction of the concept of 'metaphor' as part of teacher education research has been useful as it gives one way of reaching also the non-linguistic knowledge in our consciousness. From the point of view of a teacher the autobiographical knowledge of his or her growth environment and school is of great importance.
