ABSTRACT

The assignments in many current Foreign Language (FL) materials are still rather empty as regards the personal content for the students. Assignments in which students do not develop, express and exchange truly personal meanings are usually justified by saying that they are efficient because they focus the students' attention on the language system. Accepting this also as a pedagogical justification seems to indicate that teaching languages has become a basically non-problematic activity in people's minds. A technical approach to teaching is quite understandable in many cases, of course, considering the circumstances under which many teachers have to teach, over-crowded classrooms, too little time for teaching, inadequate teaching materials and equipment, and so on. Learning the necessary technical skills of classroom management and teaching language mainly as a system is certainly a demanding task for a teacher.
