Chronology of events 1834 December Peel’s Tamworth Manifesto claims him as leader of ‘the Great
Conservative Party’. While addressed to his constituents it is in fact an appeal to the whole electorate intended to distin guish himself from his predecessor, the Duke of Wellington, and demonstrate his own brand of political beliefs to both the electorate and his party.
