Daniel Defoe's Tour, published between 1724 and 1726, and based in literary sources but more much on experiences of an eventful life. Defoe the child of a Presbyterian family and schooling in Dorking and entering a university in Newington Green. His career as a commercial entrepreneur interrupted and joined Monmouth's side in an attempted revolution. Following publication of his first real work, the Essay on Projects he became a semi-official apologist for the policies of King William. He arrested and placed in the pillory for allegedly publishing a seditious pamphlet, The Shortest Way with Dissenters, but he released and compensated, becoming a political agent for Robert Harley. He later acted as an agent for both political factions, travelling extensively in Britain collecting information and opinions. Although Defoe an exceedingly prolific author who credited with 566 publications, he wrote all his major works between 1715 and his death in 1731.
