ABSTRACT

The exploration o f sociologists’ ‘frames’ is developed here, particularly with re ference to the problem o f the ‘truth status’ o f knowledge. General concepts of truth as encountered in sociological research are outlined. This leads into a brief exploration of the sometimes related ideas o f ‘rationality’ and ‘success’ . Empir ical studies that have openly addressed these notions are critically discussed. In conclusion the need for judgement is stressed and leads into the following chapter’s discussion o f ‘objectivity’ .
