ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some texts about, and productive of, ‘holistic medi cine’, published in the early 1980s. The ‘hierarchies’ o f the chapter’s title are competing ones initially referred to in Chapters 1 and 2, where I mentioned different ways of valuing knowledge, as ‘scientific’, produced by experts and seemingly existing ‘independently’ (Canetti) versus experiential knowledge, that might be acquired over years o f practice, say in driving, building or herb col lecting and using. Both o f these sorts o f knowledge might be challenged by a third variety, held to be revealed, perhaps divinely so.
